NOTHING YOU EVER DO FOR CHILDREN IS WASTED

GARRISON KEILLOR

Who We Are

The Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) of Rutherford County is a volunteer-powered network of committed people—from all walks of life—who believe society has a fundamental obligation to abused and neglected children. Our mission is to ensure that each of our children has the right to grow up in a safe, permanent, and loving home.

CASA Volunteers

CASA volunteers stand up for children who have been abused or neglected, ensuring they do not get overlooked in the overwhelmed legal and social service systems. Typically, volunteers manage one case at a time, remaining committed until the case is resolved or the child is placed in a safe, permanent home. For many of the children we assist, their CASA volunteer becomes the one consistent adult presence in their lives.

What Are the Requirements to be a CASA Volunteer?

  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Must be able to pass a background and reference check
  • Attend pre-service training class (30 hours)

What Are the Duties of a CASA Volunteer?

  • Interview all parties involved with a child whom the CASA Volunteer has been assigned
  • Record all findings as the investigation progresses
  • Attend Juvenile Court hearings involving the case
  • Attend the Department of Children's Services meetings involving the case
  • Prepare written reports with recommendations for all hearings
  • Monitor proceedings in other courts, which may have an impact on the child's case
  • Regularly confer with the CASA Staff
